A Medicane may hit Greece on Friday or Saturday. For now we are experiencing extreme winds for more than 24 hours and temperature has dropped abruptly. Schools near the sea have already/will shut down.

That is worrisome. Unlike a tropical cyclone where the sea warms the air which then rises in a coriolis effect to the cooler upper atmosphere, the disturbances of a cold front colliding with a warm front are spread out in a line and the effects are rather unpredictable depending upon the temperature differences between each side of the front. This is the generator of those nasty Canadian snow storms and blizzards. Do you have a snow shovel?

Nope! They are expecting heavy rains. Winds are helll. Schools shut down and good they did: Yesterday a tree fell further up my street. I was expecting my friend to call me back after 10 minutes but he didn't. The tree was in their garden and it blocked their entrance. Their building is very near the school and George and his kids use to play seek and hide there after picking them from school. Canceled their school excursion to Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (https://www.snf.org/ ) Quote: From 6 am Sept 27 until 2 pm Sept 27, the Fire Service has received more than 520 calls to remove trees and other objects that were swept away by the winds.

The winds do damage but it is easily cleaned up after the storm. The really serious damage comes with floods. Be sure to keep several days' worth of bottled water just in case.

If my garden gets flooded I will have plenty of water! Don't worry about water. We live in Athens and Super Markets can take care of this. We face water shortages only when it snows (it rarely happens in Athens) and water freezes in the pipes. There are certain areas that face serious issues. Not here. In the past our street used to become a river when heavy raining but it would clean in an hour or two. You see we are not on flat ground. Water gathers for hours a hundred meters from here only to continue and flood the houses of the other side of the avenue Those people will suffer a lot. A big issue will be the extremely rough sea. They said that the waves will be huge (worse than rough seas we get during winter.) Those staying near the sea were warned to seek safer ground. But it will not be like tropic areas as Med. is a closed sea and we do not have those monster waves. I have experienced a couple of times severe weather while on vacations and the sea became white like it was boiling! With the winds they expect in a few hours the sea will swell. Maybe my uncle's vacation house (the one that I used to go vacations when I was young) will get flooded. Water will come up from the footpath leading to the sea as it does sometimes during winter. And after the land will be full of fish... Who knows, it may rain fish too. Sunday George (and I ) wanted to go to Shadow Theater ("Uncle George's Marriage"), but I guess it will be canceled due to the bad weather.

I already played "Transport Duck". Raining all day (stopping and starting every 2-5 minutes). I took George to his chess lesson and later I made the mistake to go to the street market. Just then hit the heavy rain and I became a duck. Market disbanded, I bought a few things and of to the metro station to go and buy some more food from the Center of Athens (meat-fish-fruit market of Athens, Asian shops ...) Side lane of the avenue was flooded and had to change where I parked as when I got out I would have to step into the water or some speeding idiot would give me a shower of mud water mixed with s*** . In the Center rain was much less and when I returned roads were almost clear from water-well they maybe flooded again as the rain starts and stops all the time till now. The good news is that the Medicane is dying. Instead of passing mainly from the sea it passed over land and gradually lost much of its power. Mind that Greece is mountainous. Had it passed over sea mainly it might become stronger and cause ruin to a lot of islands. Of course it caused much damage, many lost their cars western exit from Athens was flooded and National Roads were closed. A lot of problems in many villages, towns and cities. Some photos: Kythera: Poros:

Oh Sorry wallyweb, instead of replying, it seems that by mistake I edited your post. I was more than half asleep at the time. Feel free to resurrect it! - Shocking video from Sicily, Italy: https://rumble.com/embed/ugkyd.v3vkcp/from Kalamata, Greece (watch the first seconds): https://i.rmbl.ws/s8/2/N/Y/M/P/NYMPa.caa.1.mp4?b=0&u=gkydThe toll from the medicane in Greece was not so high: One pensioner (ex police officer) died from heart attack while trapped in his car (he was crossing a torrent). Probably he got shocked from the water rising at about 80cm. Four people went missing, but one was found and rescued. The one rescued was in his car with his girl when the waters took them, but the girl managed to escape climbing a tree. When he was found alive his first words were: Has my girlfriend survived? He survived by holding on a piece of wood till he managed to reach dry land. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yypNDKDtfEAn elderly couple is still missing. Car and personal items were found around the car. Also a shepherd is missing on a mountain. His assistant was saved and explained that they were lost due to lack of visibility. It is a pity some people didn't follow the advice and warnings issued by the authorities. In a certain case where the waters of a torrent had risen more than 1m, the authorities called the locals to evacuate the area but some refused. Finally waters didn't rise higher by why to put your life at risk? And what to say about this guy, when at the same moment nearby a fisherman called fro help a he was trapped in his boat? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFu0LvxwOt8
