Still your explanation is "flawed" from what I see whenever I visit the flee market: A crazy guy who tags from his bicycle a balcony door (from which he has removed the glass) on 4 small wheels!!! Eco friendly "six wheeler" :o Please don't ask for a photo: I wouldn't risk to end in the hospital. And more important: it wouldn't be respectful.

I have no idea as to what frosch is trying to here. It seems to be a way to change the body or trailer of a truck to fit a cargo. How is it implemented? Is there a callback involved? Is there a newgrf specification? It almost sounds like something that is already available via a newgrf. :P

Then there must be reason he implemented it. Maybe avoiding glitching issues, better animation?

Houses, Industries, Objects and Arports use extended Action2 for multiple combined sprites. This sounds like something similar.
