Progressive downtown in Vasa. Well, that's one way of putting it. The town grows and have approx. 12000 citizens, and as a result some large projects have been decided during the years. Amongst them the central Travelling Center which combines local, metro, regional and interregional travels in one place; Attachment:

It creates a huge facility though that not all citizens approve of, but the alternative to have several smaller stations spread out everywhere, (as otherwise needed as Vasa is the wheel), have forced most people to accept the concept - for now! However, local authorities have brought forward the idea to also move the "old" Vasa-Kista Airport closer to the Travelling Center, something which hasn't gained any positive reactions so far!

For my swedish friends I have this particular screen; although I have an efficient network for trains connecting towns with each others, they can't obviously stop everywhere as travelling time would increase - not to mention the lack of room for a big station sometimes. Well, the solution is an Express bus network, and what would fit better than a Swebus Express company? It's of course one of George's buses that comes with company livery, something which I changed! Diary - East VasaA screen from the daily life in Vasa, hectic and stressful as always! A local Metro-train approaching the "Vasa-Kista Airport", (upper right corner), which is the "old" airport and was the only airport in the entire Vasa-region until the new VIA Airport opened. It's still used for privat flights and pilot schools and is also an important terminal for many local buses connecting eastern and southern parts of Vasa in an convinient way. The local bus company in Vasa uses a green livery as can be seen in some spots on the screen. Another Metro-train is on it's way to Vasa Central and thereafter to continue to Askim, a south suburb, mostly known for its farming industries. Another way of travelling is by bus - of course - and on its way to Vasa is a regional Express bus, as it's just entering the Canal Bridge Attachment:

Diary - Vasa, October 24-2006Presenting all towns and cities in the INFRA-region, starting with Vasa and Jakobstad, is a way to make it possible to return and check for changes done during the time - especially as I constantly make changes of all kinds Anyway, here goes; About Vasa;Settled in a valley the city of Vasa is surrounded by mountains and large hills, something which offers a bit of difficulties whenever the city council decides to start projects requiring more space than rarely available. The city is the capitol in the region and act as a wheel for all the other towns developments, thus having a very well developed infrastructure with access to regional buses, trains, seaports, and airports. Constantly growing the city of Vasa also experiences traffic issues, especially downtown and much work are done to direct at least regional transports, (freight trucks and Express buses), to use newly built access roads to nearby highways - rather than running through the entire downtown to get to their central destinations. The above image shows the central locations, (stops), for some transports; ¤1 - Being the capitol the city of Vasa obviously attracts many visitors, most of them arriving by buses. Initially this was a big problem as the lack of suitable stops for tourist coaches forced many of them to use local bus stops - something which of course resulted in lots of queue's, and angered the local bus company, Vasa City Buses, VCB. In an effort to calm down the situation a temporary location for tourist coaches was established at the North Pier, but plans for a better welcoming area for tourists are in the planning - as soon as there are money available. ¤2 - The City Harbor isn't used as much as it was in early days. Today most goods are shipped using trucks, but environment activists lobbies for more goods to be taken by railroads. Future plans involves a move of the harbor to a western loaction which will allow for a park area to be established. ¤3 - Without the commuter trains the roads to and from Vasa would be completely filled with commuters going to or from schools, work places, shopping areas, and so on. The local metro company, VCC, provides well scheduled trains to and from suburbs of Vasa, including VIA, the international airport north of Vasa, and the central station is of course directly connected to Vasa Central, the main train station. ¤4 - The central station giving Vasa's citizens good access to all places in the region, serviced by both ordinary trains as well as express trains. ¤5 - The Seaport is located north of the North Pier, and offers sea rides to cities far away, something which is highly appreciated by many tourists as the sea rides themeselves offers a very nice view of the landscape. ¤6 - Where trains don't go, buses do! The last years demands of faster trains and shorter travel times have resulted in many stations being closed, or railroad network being straightened out in a way that have resulted in some towns no longer being part of them. Express buses do fill some of that void, and a new terminal has been established near the central station for convinient access to other transportation means. Attachment:

The hills and mountains surrounding Vasa causes many head aches, especially when city developments are at quest. In order for the city council to be able to develop the southern parts, it was needed to split the central station and allow for road access, which is important for town development to occur at all. While it proved successful, new residential buildings are established also in the "problematic" southern area. And as a bonus mail and good services was given a central loading/unloading terminal on top of the central station. Attachment:

Vasa has two airports. Apart from VIA, the new one upnorth, the old airport still remains as a resource to privat jets and some mail service routes. As many local buses along with the only remaining tram line, (initially Vasa had 4 tram lines, but efficiency demands has lead to a closure of three of them by replacing them with buses. The tracks has never been removed from the streets though), service the airport terminal, it's a place that offers very good access to most parts of Vasa. The surroundings are currently being exploited by residential planners.

Western part of Vasa is also the sea way into the city, thus providing less room for developments. However, as the city council work with some plans to move the harbor, it's most likely that such a project will involve also other projects as initial costs will prove to be rather high otherwise! VIA, Vasa's international airport is - obviously - the most busy airport in the entire region, offering lots of destinations for both passengers, mail, and goods. Apart from airport shuttles between VIA and Vasa as well as Navestad upnorth, the airport is also served by VCC. Attachment:

Diary - Jakobstad, October 24-2006 Eastern suburb of Vasa, located on a hillside with access to Vasa by the central VCC station, Jakobstad lack any industrial or commercial facilities. But the surroundings are very nice and the coast way attracts many visitors and tourist each year! Attachment:

Diary - Salem, October 28-2006Located in the south corner Salem has suffered from the recent effeciency projects demanded by the regional council, forcing the railroad companies to provide faster trains and shortened travelling times. This has resulted in the railroad being straightened out in some places, Salem being one of them, with the railroad network now running in a tunnel inside the mountain in the background. And as such the railroad station is currently not in use at all, and all travels to and from the little town is provided by Express Buses, and a few daily departures from the local airport. However, a small movement has proposed the creation of a railroad museum to attract tourists and make use of the closed railroad station - especially since there are some older locomotives staying inside the old depot. Diary - Askim, October 28-2006Being one of Vasa's suburbs, this small community south of Vasa has excellent services thanks to the local Metro, along with the Regional Express, the Express Bus Service, that passes by Askim on its route to the less fortunate Salem in the south. Attachment:

Diary - Vaxholm, October 28-2006While Salem lost their railroad access due to the effeciency projects, the town of Vaxholm recieved one. However, it wasn't possible to have the station being built downtown Vaxholm, and there were quite a few disputes whether or not allowing the town to build one at all, but in the end the town council made an agreement with the regional board which resulted in a new station north of the town center. And this was something the people of Vaxholm had been looking forward to as the only services running, if travelling, was by the Regional Express. Still, no high speed trains do stop at Vaxholm Station - only interregional traffic! For faster trains, folks of Vaxholm still have to catch a bus to Vasa or Sofia, but some trains are better then nothing, as people often say here! Attachment:

Diary - Kista, October 28-2006Having a perfect location between the two largest cities, Vasa and Sofia, the town of Kista can make use of the goodies that comes with it such as road, and railroad services. While the main railroad line only passes by, Kista has access not only to Vasa's metro, as being a suburb, but also to the newly built subway in Sofia, (the only one in the region), that was stretched out as far as to Kista as well. Diary - Sofia, October 28-2006Located beautifully in the eastern corner, Sofia is the second largest city in the region. And as such any kind of services can be found here, including the newly built subway - which is the only one running in the region. Two lines are currently running from "Norra Station" via downtown Sofia, one ending in Kista, and the other one at SIA, the international airport north of Sofia. The screen below shows the downtown area with the subway station near the dome; Attachment:

Eastern part of Sofia with parts of the harbor and the ever so busy "Norra Station", the starting point of the subway system that the citizens are so proud of. Many local buses and trams connects eastern residential areas in Sofia with this station, so yes - it's very busy indeed; Attachment:

The train station has recently been built and includes, apart from the subway, also local lines running from Fredrikshamn, Esbo, and Mariehamn, the so called 5-region. The initials from the three towns are F, E, and M. Put together you'll get FEM which is 5 in English, (Swedish language); Attachment:

Long Journey from LKAB to SSABEver since the important railroad from LKAB to the steel mill upnorth was built, the business has had a huge impact on public finances allowing for other costly projects to be decided and get started on. However, the later decision to close down the steel mill upnorth and instead have the iron ore from LKAB hauled to the steel mill in the south, not even very far from LKAB, has resulted in a very long distance to travel for the I-Ore trains. Even though the actual distance between LKAB and SSAB is rather short, having the precious iron ore delivered by trucks isn't an option as the amount of trucks required would have a significant impact on the dirt roads in the mountains - and the puclic infrastructure authorities simply doesn't have the money to provide the industries with proper roads. So in the meantime the I-Ore trains have to take the long journey through the northern region in order to reach SSAB in the south. And the same goes for the oil trains! Getting closer to SSAB in the south, the trains from LKAB has to travel through one of the busiest railroads in the region. Connecting several railroad lines with each others, to and from four busy industrial areas, the waiting times at the "Siesta Tracks" can be long. Below is the surpass through Vaxholm; Attachment:

Finally reaching SSAB the waiting time to get unloaded isn't long as the stations capacity is far from reached. This is due to some railroad projects still being developed which will allow for steel, fish, and goods trains to use the station; Attachment:

But other industrial stations are way more busier. Uddeholm outside the city of Sofia in the eastern region is one of those very busy stations, forcing trains to spend lots of time at the so called "Siesta Tracks", in this particular case located both before and after the station area. Before the "Siesta Tracks" was built for Uddeholm arrivels, trains would simply occupie the main railroad forcing other trains to block exits to other railroads - something which wasn't acceptable at all. Soon it would turn out that trains leaving Uddeholm would cause congestions and blocks in the same manner as arriving trains, why the railroad tracks authorities decided to build a "Siesta Track" also for departuring trains. This has turned out to be a good investment in opposite of having the main railroad lines expanded with more tracks - something due to the mountainous areas are to be considered as very expensive!

Vasa, Monday 2nd of December The opening of new mines in the LKAB area while closing down the oil wells has resulted in an overall increased production of iron ore and copper ore. But being good news for LKAB company it also ment bad news for the RRA, (Road & Rail Authority), as the hauling routes became even more congested with freight trains trying to reach the industrial harbor of Salem. - Despite putting lots of money in several so called "siesta tracks" we haven't been able to reduce the congestion throughout most bottlenecks, RRA spokesperson said. In order for LKAB to get official clearance for an increased iron and copper ore production on top of Hekla mountains, the company had to find a better solution for the total of 11 heavy I-Ore trains to haul the raw material to Salem. And the solution was to let the I-Ore trains take a new turn north of Navestad and pass the Vasa City Terminal instead of going via Vaxholm. -This not only reduces congestions, but also allows for our trains to reach their final destination quicker, LKAB officials said. The idea of making use of the under construction VCT, (Vasa City Terminal), came during a conference in Sofia where we had the opportunity to meet Vasa City officials who where searching for more financial support for their huge VCT project, LKAB spokesperson continued. -Extending the already laid rail line a bit further north where the old LKAB line meets the RRA lines was a simple solution, Vasa City officials said. But even though a solution has been reached and LKAB has gotten the clearance to start their new mines, RRA still fears that once the new VCT opens up for business there will be some major problems for trains trying to pass through Vasa. Meanwhile the 11 I-Ore trains are hauling their valuable raw materials from LKAB Hekla to SSAB in Salem. /// Photos to follow; Attachment:

The city of Vasa is growing rapidly, and it's almost a fight between Vasa and the neighboring city of Sofia which one of them to claim being the biggest city in the region! With nearly 30000 habitants Vasa still holds the number one position though! Anyways, growing bigger means that new corporations are establishing with their large stories, like the ones shown below just outside the north entrance to Vasa; Attachment:

To celebrate the new year, (yeah, lots of celebrations in this diary lately :D ), the board of infrastructure recently opened the new highway that'll replace the older one running from Jakobstad via tunnels below Vasa through Fredrikshamn. One of the reasons has been the huge Vasa downtown project that's currently in process, and the city council has been lobbying the board of infrastructure to get this new highway opened, simply as the older one was in the way of some nearby projects. The new highway starts in Jakobstad and runs north of the town in opposite to the old one that ran south of the town. Attachment:

The previous location of the western entrance/exit to Vasa which is now gone. For the time being the city council decided to dig up the landscape and let the seawater in, giving the citizens a beautified surrounding. Attachment:

The eastern entrance/exit to Vasa which went below the city into a tunnel is gone as well, replaced by a single road leading up to the northeast downtown area. One side project decided by the city council is a move of Vasa City Terminal, previously located upnorth for the purpose of transporting goods throughout the region. While actually never opened, the above location is currently being discussed as a suitable replacement. Attachment:

Back in Vasa the huge project to change part of the downtown which includes a new location of the canal and some other heavy landscape changes, has started. Part of the canal has been filled and new structures are arising from the new ground. The city council needed more space to allow for the downtown area itself to expand, and the only reasonable solution was to simply relocate the highway, move the canal and fill up the former water areas. The northern part of Vasa has a new metro station and it's only a matter of time when the bulldozers arrives to give room for a new canal, (for the ships transporting iron ore from the mountains), and a reconstruction of the residential areas.

Next to work on is to move the waterfront closer to the west side of downtown, something which means that a lot of the buildings "climbing uphills" will have to meet the bulldozer! Update to come!

Leaving 2007 and reaching 2010 due to some "issues"... Slowly returning to TTDLX again after quite some time of absence. As some of you may know, I lost my life partner last year from cancer so it's been a difficult time to say the least - and still is of course! But I'm taking one step at a time, one day at a time to make things work as good as they can considering the circumstances! And I have re-started my initial map to make proper use of .grf's and latest nightlies as I'm still focusing on TTDP. I won't join the OTTD community until at least custom bridgeheads is an option. Can't live without it! For those of you still interested in my INFRA work, do look forward to some exciting stuff ahead! Attachment:

I'm still working on the new scenario map, and it takes some time to transfer buildings from TTRS2 to TTRS3 - especially since the latter have snow covered buildings, which I need to get rid of since I use rocks instead of snow! It would be nice to see a .grf though that instead of giving us snow based on a pre-defined level, gives us a snow season based on the year cycle! That would make it more interesting rather than having some snow covered areas looking like islands on an ocean... Anyways, new screen will come as soon as I've managed to transfer everything. Things doesn't get faster though as I tend to start drawing and improving in the middle of everything... Not far from Vännäs is Vaxholm located on a small island south of Vasa, the capitol of Innovatia. Vaxholm has recently become a resort due to its location and the newly built coastal hotel is about to be extended further... Being close to Vännäs has resulted in Vaxholm not having a railway station of its own, but is served by nation wide Express buses along with regional buses. Attachment:

Moving on, this time approaching the 2nd largest city in Innovatia, located in the Eastland county at the southern coastline. Sofia, (soon to be renamed), is home of the country's largest oil industry, and Green Cargo, the government owned freight company, have one of its largest fleet of rail based tankers in Sofia. The image below shows the outskirt of Sofia, with the highway entering the city going on a lower level for the remaining parts of Eastland county... Attachment:

I tend to look at my game/map as an ongoing nation where year passes by and changes occur whenever necessary - all to improve it all. And by all means, custom bridgeheads do play a cruisal part as I would never be able to develop all these narrow and somewhat complicated infrastructure projects I always work on... ) I have attached two images below showing the town of Vännäs, originally named Salem. The 1st image shows the town during its birth, and the 2nd the same town a couple of 100's years later - just to somewhat visualize what I'm talking about. Of course, the comparison gets more significant if I should chose Vasa... unrecognizable to say the least... As you can see not only the shape of the town has changed a lot, but the coast line has also changed to allow room for industries and railroads/stations... The tiny road to Vasa is long gone, and with an increased traffic, (mostly trucks), a new highway has been built to meet the requirements... ) Attachment:
