I decided to give athanasios a little help with keeping this section alive, so I'm starting a few topics. This one will be about the way we use technologies and ideas to make the world a better place.

Starting with this idea of connected green rooftops in Silicon Valley :

Better than cement roofs absorbing heat.

My concerns though:
no space left for solar panels (whenever this technology matures...)
no space for solar water heating panels
technology used as an excuse to build more

The Greek National Library and Opera are already under construction:

Nice idea about the park over the buildings but who will compensate the local residents whose view of the sea is blocked by such a tall and charmless structure?

BTW: I remember my dad taking me there to swim when I was a kid. We would drop from the bus right next to the beach. Now the beaches are gone the sea is hundred of meters away and huge and ugly shopping centers, Olympic games structures and marinas are sprouting over the debris that was thrown into the sea. If it was mainly to create new parks I would have no objection.

Sometimes overconstruction will happen anyway, so getting a building with a green roof is picking the lesser evil.

As for solar panels, I think their place is in the specialized facilities, until the technology is good enough to implement them straight into the glass facades of the buildings (which is not so far away).
The most important things about green roofing are heat absorbing, and air cleaning. I mean, it's easier to get electricity from elsewhere, but stopping a city from turning into nightmarish dungeon is more important ;)
