- And some tribute to the Greek scientist who contributed greatly for this mission: NASA scientist Nikolaos Paschalidis, who recreated five instrument-enabling microchips for one of the instruments flying on the New Horizons mission, has waited nearly 10 years for the mission to reach its destination.

Technology Infusion
Although he has waited nearly 10 years to witness his technology in action as New Horizons investigates the last known unexplored planetary body in the solar system, he already knows his microchips will work. The first indication came one year after launch during New Horizon’s Jupiter encounter. “PEPSSI collected excellent data,” Paschalidis said.
While New Horizons was racing across the solar system for its rendezvous with Pluto, Paschalidis was infusing the technology into many other instruments and missions. His microelectronic technology was used on NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft, which studied the planet closest to the Sun — Mercury — and the Interstellar Boundary Explorer that probed the heliospheric boundary with the interstellar medium.
He also used a second-generation version of the technology on NASA’s JUNO mission, which is expected to reach Jupiter next summer, the now-operating Van Allen Probes, and the recently launched Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. Now under development, NASA’s Solar Probe and the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter missions also will fly the technology.

Grab this photo because you won't have the chance to see a better one for many decades to come (LOL I 'd better say it is the last we will see in our life! Even if there comes to be one better we won't be able to understand what we are looking at by that time! Me: Hey George, who is on the photo? Is he my grand-grandson! ). We will get better ones from the other side of Pluto the 2 following days, so we may be able to explain those strange formations. And then back to the 'refrigerator' till the next (last?) encounter with another object half a decade from now.
IMO those formations, look like small seas/lakes with ultra wide rivers flowing into them, but scientists have different suggestions.

Bigger: In Color (with Charon): Charon featuring a canyon bigger than Grand Canyon!: And a tribute to the women who power NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto:

Amazing finding! Pluto is geologically active. No craters visible! Icy mountains and canyons! - Charon is geologically active too! Only a few craters appear! (image is compressed and colorized. RAW image will be transmitted later.) - Hydra with plenty of water ice (we will get better images soon):

Amazing images and higher resolution ones to come (during the next year-they are safely stored and transmitted back to Earth. Alas we need faster connections! )

OK, no seas found but finally something may FLOW It is somewhat similar to glaciers on Earth! - Pluto in false color. This is useful as it shows seasonal changes! - And ... an atmosphere! Who would expect that? - Pluto isn't just a frozen piece of rock. This mission gave us so many surprises!

And Charon in more detail!
Quote:
This great canyon system stretches more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) across the entire face of Charon and likely around onto Charon’s far side. Four times as long as the Grand Canyon, and twice as deep in places...
and a flyover:
But hold your jaws. More detailed images will be transmitted during the next year.

In a planet that the most obvious water ice spectral signatures correspond to areas that are bright red in recently released color images you wouldn't expect a view likethis!!!:
