Awhile ago there was this discussion about coding normal buildings as industries. Can't remember for what reasons and how it all ended up eventually. But it got me wondering whether or not "eye candy" can be coded to have more functions than to just sit there and look good? :?

While it would be the ultimate option to be able to actually select what is to be built and where on a map, I'm more aiming towards normal buildings exceeding the size of 2x2, and what could possibly be done there...

Any ideas?

Unfortunately the sole purpose of NewObjects is to be pure "eye candy" To add functions would duplicate those already available in other features such as towns and industries. In view of the 2x2 tile limit for town sprites, that narrows your options to having them coded as industries. There is another advantage here, industries can have irregular layouts, a desirable property lacking in NewObjects.

So what you're saying is that using a normal - yet larger - building structure, and have it coded as an industry instead - and on top of that being able to use irregular sizes, would do the trick?

You may have a look for this grf (TT-forums).

Thanks Katve! That's the outcome of the discussions that took place regarding this specific feature. Question is, how to use it effeciently... :?

Another advantage of doing this as an industry vs as a town building is that the local authorities have a nasty taste for neighbourhood revitalization projects. Buildings disappear only to be replaced by something quite different. Industries tend to be more stable over time.

...which therefor could be the solution I'm looking for! :W

Now, what would be a proper industry for highrise building blocks - which can be set up to allow for different layouts, thus creating a descent looking downtown centre? And will it work in conjunction with other industry sets?

Yes this link is very very interesting in many ways and can be powerful to allow more flexibility.
